The u-value is an absolute measure for the thermal loss of a structural element- in this case double glazed windows.
The lower the u-value of a window is, the smaller the amount of heat that escapes to the outside. therefore, a low u-value means a high level of insulation, decreasing heating/cooling costs. There are two type of u-values, depending on which part of the window is being described:
Ug– heat insulation value with relation to glazing (g= glass)
Uw– insulation value of the entire window, glass and frame (w=window)
The energy efficiency of houses is measured through a star-rating system. The worst performing buildings get a zero rating through to a 10 star rating for a building that needs no artificial heating or cooling.
In addition to the 6 star rating for heating and cooling the BCA (Building Code of Australia) requires all houses to meet new lighting efficiency standards. A house built to a 6 star standard will use about 20-25% less energy to heat and cool when compared to a similar sized 5 star house.

Double glazing is the glazing process in which a window or door is made with two panes of glass with a space between them. In Nuway Glass & Glazing windows that space is filled the argon gas which gives extra insulation because it is an inert gas.
Another benefit you’ll get from double glazing is that the glass helps prevent the majority of condensation that you will typically see on single glazed windows.

A passive house is a very well insulated, virtually air-tight building which of course means double or triple glazing for your windows.
R-value and V-value are essentially two sides of the same coin.
R-value is usually cited when discussing things such as wall and ceiling insulation values. The term does not translate well to windows.
That industry prefers U-values. The two are actually inversely related. The higher the R-value the better insulated are the wall and ceilings. The lower the U-value, the better the window does in keeping out the heat and cold. If you use a low emission glass filled with argon you add an R-value to R-5.
IG means insulated glazing. This essentially means the glazing is doubled or tripled to insulate the window external elements.
A thermally broken frame means that the frame of the window doesn’t transfer heat from the outside to the inside. You can think of it as an insulating frame which is very beneficial in our aluminium products.
Double glazing uses 2 panes, triple 3. Triple glazing further increases heat/noise insulation and is necessary for passive house projects.
